Stripe launched the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) this week, co-authored with Tempo, their stablecoin spin-off. Visa announced “Agentic Ready” for European issuers. Mastercard’s Agent Pay is live with Santander, PayPal, Fiserv, and half of Europe’s banking sector. Everyone wants to be the payments layer when AI agents start spending your money.

The Bird’s translation: The payments industry just discovered that AI agents can’t fill in a checkout form. So they’ve built seven competing protocols to fix it.

Stripe’s pitch is probably the most ambitious of them all, where MPP is “rail-agnostic” and currently powers agents ordering sandwiches at Prospect Butcher Co. in New York and printing letters via PostalForm. Yes, you read that correctly. The flagship use case for autonomous machine payments is deli orders and postage.

Visa’s Agentic Ready programme claims to have enrolled 20+ issuers including Barclays, HSBC UK, Revolut, and Santander but is still in “controlled production environments” - which means nobody has switched this on for real customers yet.

Mastercard has been the loudest and broadest, partnering with Microsoft for Copilot Checkout, integrating Agent Pay into PayPal’s wallet, and running what they claim was “Europe’s first live end-to-end payment executed by an AI agent” with Santander in early March.

The transaction was some cinema tickets.

The mechanism by which it works: The actual technical problem is straightforward. AI agents can’t authenticate like humans, can’t hold card credentials, and can’t prove consent. So we’ve got Shared Payment Tokens (Stripe), Agentic Network Tokens (Visa/Mastercard), and the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) all trying to solve the same identity-and-permission problem from slightly different angles.

The Victim: Every billing vendor who just finished their MCP integration and thought they were “AI-native.”

The protocols are multiplying faster than the transactions they’re meant to carry. The Bird gives it six months before someone publishes a “Unified Agentic Protocol” that unifies nothing of importance.

🙂‍↕️ THE BIRD CALLED IT: Both AI giants are now hiring billing teams

Back in January, The Bird predicted that OpenAI would start hiring billing engineers within 2-4 months after Stripe’s acquisition of Metronome left them running their monetisation stack on a strategic frenemy’s infrastructure.

Two months later, both OpenAI and Anthropic are hiring aggressively for billing - with build vs. buy featuring extensively.

OpenAI posted an Order Management & Billing Operations role. The job description is a confession letter. They want someone to “own end-to-end operational readiness for new monetisation launches” and “embed AI and automation directly into Order Management and Billing workflows.” The required experience section lists “Salesforce, Oracle Fusion, NetSuite, Stripe, Metronome“ - now by name.

Read between the lines, OpenAI is building the operational layer to eventually decouple from Metronome. They’re hiring someone who knows the current stack (Stripe + Metronome) but can architect what comes next.

Anthropic is hiring a Director of Order Management & Billing, a Software Engineer for their Billing Platform, and an Engineering Manager for Product Monetisation. Their job posting for the billing engineer says “Anthropic exists to ensure the world safely navigates the transition through transformative AI. That work is funded by commercial revenue, and every dollar of it runs through Billing.”

Anthropic is building a proper billing engineering org from scratch. The Director role reports to the Head of Revenue Accounting and owns “the customer billing lifecycle from contract provisioning through invoice generation.” They also posted a Finance Systems Integration Engineer role. This is a company that’s decided billing is infrastructure, not overhead.

The two largest AI API providers on the planet are both potentially building in-house billing teams at the same time. OpenAI because they can’t afford to have their monetisation layer owned by Stripe. Anthropic because they’re growing fast enough that billing complexity is becoming existential as they look for more international acquirers to reduce payment overhead.

The Billing Angle: Both companies run usage-based billing at a scale that breaks most billing platforms. Billions of API calls. Token-level metering. Enterprise contracts with committed-use agreements layered on top of pay-as-you-go. Credits, overages, tiered pricing, multi-product bundles. If you sell billing software and you’re not terrified that your two biggest potential customers are both building in-house, you’re not paying attention.

The Bird predicted OpenAI would build. Anthropic joining the party is the signal that third-party billing has a shelf life for companies processing at this scale.

The Bird’s Verdict: This is Stripe telling Chargebee and Recurly that localisation is a checkbox feature, not a product.

Stripe AI integration benchmark suite

Open-sourced a benchmark suite for testing AI models building Stripe integrations. Covers codebases, data migrations, breaking version changes.

The Bird’s Verdict: Stripe is training the market to benchmark against themselves. If every AI coding assistant optimises for Stripe’s integration tests, guess whose API becomes the default? Smart lock-in disguised as open source.

Maxio’s march kitchen sink

Usage Backdating, Dunning UI overhaul, VAT breakdowns by line item, Apple Pay, Salesforce improvements, NetSuite sync fixes, and another MCP integration because of course.

The Bird’s Verdict: Maxio claims to have shipped more features in March than most other vendors ship in a quarter - or at least they’re talking about it. Usage Backdating (applying late usage to the correct billing period) is the kind of boring, essential plumbing that real billing engineers need. The MCP is still a circus checkbox.

The rest is solid mid-market work. Nice work Maxio.

Lago’s enterprise push

Security logs, custom roles and permissions, multiple payment methods per customer, granular API access to charges, webhook filtering. Also hiring 15+ people across Europe and the US.

The Bird’s Verdict: Lago is doing the unglamorous work of becoming enterprise-ready. Audit trails searchable via API, webhook filtering by event type, multi-processor support split by geography. This is what enterprise procurement teams actually ask for when they get further in the sales process.

The hiring wave with focus on a Product Engineer building AI Agents is interesting. They’re betting on AI as the interface layer for billing operations.

Solvimon Workflow Feature

Solvimon teases configurable billing lifecycle events with, per their VP Growth, “endless configurability”.

The Bird’s Verdict: The billing lifecycle is where most platforms need extra help from outside platforms. If you can let customers define what happens when a subscription renews, a payment fails, a credit expires, or a usage threshold hits without writing code, you’ve solved one of the hardest UX problems in billing. Worth watching.

Chargebee’s silence is entering its third month of being “particularly loud”. At some point, silence stops being strategic and starts being clinical. The market is moving. Stripe owns the usage-based layer now. AI companies are building in-house. And Chargebee is... at CloudFest?

Zuora’s, after their “usage pricing was a mistake, actually” moment in January, they’ve retreated into case studies. The OG subscription platform is watching the world move to hybrid and consumption models without a clear counter-narrative.

Polar is hiring across compliance, payments engineering, platform engineering, and technical support. Transactions grew 50% month-over-month in February. 7,000+ new merchant signups monthly. They hosted a hackathon with Lovable in Stockholm. Polar is the quiet one that’s actually growing.

Lago is hiring 15+ across Europe and the US, with specific callouts for a Product Engineer building AI Agents, Product Marketing, Sales, and FP&A/RevOps. Nearing 50 employees. The open-source billing darling is scaling its commercial engine.

Is the agentic commerce gold rush is the MCP circus all over again, just with bigger logos attached? Stripe, Visa, and Mastercard are all building protocols for a future where AI agents buy things autonomously. The use cases so far are underwhelming.

Both OpenAI and Anthropic hiring billing teams at the same time tells you that the third-party billing market has a ceiling, and the biggest customers in the world just bumped their heads on it.

The Bird’s scoop: The two most important AI companies in the world both posted senior billing leadership roles this fortnight, with neither job description mentioning a single billing tool.

No Stripe. No Zuora. No Metronome - despite Metronome being Anthropic’s listed billing infrastructure in Stripe’s own blog post from a few weeks back.

Both Anthropic (Director, Order Management & Billing, $230K–$300K) and OpenAI (Order to Cash, Order management, and Billing Lead) are hiring for the full lifecycle: consumption-based billing, subscription management, order-to-cash, enterprise provisioning. The roles are substantive. The compensation is serious. And the silence on tooling is deafening to the bird.

We read this one of two ways. Either both companies are in early-stage ops maturity and genuinely haven’t locked on tooling (which we know isn’t true) - or they’re hiring people specifically to evaluate whether to build in-house.

At OpenAI’s scale, with their billing infrastructure now running on a platform owned by a strategic competitor and that business case writes itself on a napkin.

Anthropic is also paying up to $300K for someone to own billing operations, while their billing infrastructure runs on Stripe, who just acquired Metronome and listed Anthropic as a customer in the announcement. That’s an interesting org chart to inherit on your first day.

The Bird’s prediction from January stands. OpenAI begins building internal billing infrastructure before Q3. These job postings are the first feathers on the runway.

When the companies that define AI monetisation won’t name a billing vendor in a job description, that’s not an oversight. That’s a signal.

Verdict: The most important product announcement Stripe made this week is the one you can’t purchase.

Read that again, because Stripe claims:

• Credits? We do that. (Solvimon, Orb, Lago - you listening?)

• Outcome-based? We do that. (Every “AI-native billing” vendor who made this their pitch - noted.)

This is Stripe telling the entire billing industry: “Whatever you think your differentiator is, we already have it. With Anthropic, Intercom, and Lovable as receipts”.

Billing vendors need to realise their positioning decks need rewriting. “We do credits better than Stripe” is a harder sell when Stripe is publicly naming Lovable as a credits customer.

Stripe’s defensive acquisition is blocking OpenAI from billing

The Stripe-Metronome deal officially closed this week (Jan 14). Patrick Collison announced a billion-dollar acquisition of “an exceptionally powerful metering engine that already powers OpenAI, Anthropic, and NVIDIA.”

Read that customer list again please - OpenAI, Anthropic, and NVIDIA.

While some say that Stripe needed usage-based billing capabilities, The bird has a different theory: Stripe bought Metronome to block OpenAI from buying it first.

OpenAI is quite likely Metronome’s largest customer by revenue and volume. Their entire API business runs on usage-based billing, tokens in, tokens out. Billing infrastructure is existential for them.

If OpenAI were to, say, acquire Metronome, they wouldn’t just be an AI company anymore. They’d be a billing competitor - with lots of distribution.

With enterprise relationships.

With the technical credibility that comes from their own massive-scale metering.

Stripe saw this threat, and for them a billion dollars is cheap insurance against a new titan entering your market with unlimited capital and a potential grudge against their card processing fees.

The consequence and opportunity is that OpenAI is now perhaps a bit too reliant on a strategic frenemy. Their billing infrastructure runs on a system owned by a company that competes for the same enterprise relationships.

The Bird’s prediction: OpenAI will build their own billing infrastructure in-house sooner rather than later. They cannot afford to have their monetisation layer owned by someone else’s platform. The Bird expects to see hiring of billing engineers in the next 2-4 months.

Orb, Amberflo, and the rest are now competing against Stripe’s distribution machine and racing against OpenAI’s inevitable build-vs-buy decision.

THE MCP CIRCUS: Everyone’s got one, nobody knows why

Last week we covered Dodo Payments’ ContextMCP. This week Zuora’s MCP and Maxio MCP both went live.

Three MCP announcements in two weeks - the billing industry has discovered Model Context Protocol a few months after it peaked.

The Bird has questions though - specifically: does anyone actually need this?

A couple of months ago, Anthropic published some posts casting shadows on MCP’s future. With Skills now common-place, MCP might be solving a problem that no longer exists.

The criticism, as articulated by developers like theo goes like this:

1. MCP was created because LLMs were bad at writing code to API specs

2. LLMs are now good at writing code to API specs

3. Anthropic’s proposed fix for MCP’s problems is having the LLM write code to a generated spec

4. So why not just use the original API specs that humans already use?

We’ve gone full circle. We started with OpenAPI specs, abandoned them for MCP because LLMs couldn’t handle them, and now that LLMs can handle specs, we’re generating specs from MCP to have LLMs write code against them.

Zuora’s MCP promises developers can “build quote-to-cash integrations in minutes instead of days”, while Maxio’s MCP offers “governed AI access to financial data”. Both sound dull and impressive simultaneously until you ask why is this even necessary.

Funnily enough, Zuora’s post includes a video showing how Windsurf is used. Seriously - who even uses Windsurf and not Claude Code or Cursor? Out of touch with reality!

The Bird’s verdict: MCPs are checkbox features for vendor marketing decks. The actual utility is questionable, the token costs are real, and the risk model is undefined. Claude Skills (meaning, markdown files that explain how to call API) might be the more future-proof AI-native approach, but that’s far less impressive on a feature comparison slide.

LAGO’S AI AGENT ARMY: Chasing the narrative

Lago’s CEO announced they’ve built three AI agents:

• Billing Assistant: Process billing tasks via plain language

• Finance Assistant: Generate invoices, reports, compliance answers without engineering inputs

• Pricing Assistant: Simulate pricing models against real usage data before launch

The roadmap promises revenue predictions, churn modelling, and automatic user segmentation.

Also buried in Lago’s news: PayPal joined their customer roster alongside CoreWeave, Mistral, Groq, and Synthesia.

Zuora’s Pricing Waterfall View

Their pitch: “View the step-by-step breakdown of how a final price is derived” for dynamic pricing.

The mechanic: Displays each layer - from base price, dynamic price (segment-based, attribute-based, negotiated), formula-based adjustments, discounts. Finally, you can see why a price is what it is.

The Bird’s verdict: This is actually useful. When your pricing logic has seventeen layers and nobody remembers why that enterprise customer gets 23.7% off, a waterfall view is a torch aimed at the logic. Surprisingly decent!

Solvimon Express Checkout with Apple Pay

Their pitch: “Your user taps Pay, and Solvimon handles billing address + tax calculation + account creation in one transaction.”

The mechanic: Single-tap conversion for AI and B2C products. Seven seconds from intent to upgrade. No form-filling. No friction.

The Bird’s verdict: This isn’t a payment feature. This is identity ingestion. For PLG and B2C, the signup form is the enemy. If you can skip it entirely and create the account on the payment event, you’ve removed the biggest conversion killer. Clever.

Zoho’s UAE Data Centres

Their pitch: Dubai and Abu Dhabi facilities, AED 100 million investment, 100+ cloud solutions hosted locally.

The mechanic: After every possible certification, now looking at data sovereignty for government compliance.

The Bird’s verdict: Not everything should be stored in us-east-1. If you need data residency in the UAE, Zoho just became viable.

Meanwhile, the MCP circus continues. Three billing vendors shipped MCP integrations this month, and the developer community is increasingly asking why MCP exists at all when LLMs can just write code to existing API specs. Anthropic’s own proposed fix for MCP’s problems is essentially “have the LLM write code” — which rather defeats the purpose of having MCP in the first place.

Lago and Orb rebrand: The beige takeover

Our scoop: Two billing vendors emerged from their chrysalises this week, wings still wet, desperate to look “mature.” Instead, they look identical.

Both have committed the cardinal sin of B2B SaaS design: beige.

Our diagnosis: Both companies are scrambling to own the “AI native billing” narrative because every vendor knows AI changes everything about usage metering. But instead of differentiating on technical capability they differentiated on... gradient direction and font serifs.

Fear of being different is worse than being wrong. At least wrong is memorable.

ZUORA’S MIDLIFE CRISIS: “Usage pricing was a mistake, actually”

The OG subscription platform has “discovered” hybrid pricing.

Zuora posted on LinkedIn (Jan 6) that “usage pricing promised perfection. Reality had other plans”, so now they’re positioning hybrid pricing, meaning blending fixed and usage components as the market solution.

Zuora spent nearly 20 years flogging subscriptions, then usage-based models as the future of SaaS. Their entire pitch was “subscriptions are dying, usage is the way” and now they’ve discovered that pure usage-based pricing creates “unpredictable bills” that CFOs reject.

Feels a bit like this is damage control

Zuora Collections AI (launched Jan 8). says they have “AI [that] helps cut the busywork” in collections operations.

Translation: Sounds a bit like dunning to me. They’ve bolted some GPT onto AR aging reports and automated dunning emails. It’s a premium feature, naturally.

Our verdict: Watching Zuora admit usage pricing was oversold is incredible. Welcome to the club, boys.

“ML-powered usage forecasting” in Beta, of course.

Their pitch: “Our own ML model” for predicting usage-based revenue. 12-month forward forecasts with three scenarios (Conservative, Realistic, Optimistic), with filters by currency, customer, region, plan.

The reality: CFOs are genuinely terrified of usage-based overages, so forecasting tools are the flashlight for the dark room.

Our verdict: Wait for GA before trusting it with forecasts that matter.

Dodo Payments’ ContextMCP

Their pitch: “An MCP-native system that continuously syncs repos, docs, and APIs and serves always fresh context to agents”. Built internally for Sentra (their AI billing automation tool).

The Reality: Eh. Dodo built this to solve their own problems automating billing operations and open-sourced it.

If your billing automation relies on agents like this that need continuous context syncing, you’re either at the bleeding edge or about to have a very expensive incident when the LLM hallucinates a refund policy too.

Our verdict: MCPs are a first-step towards real APIs. Let’s wait and see.

Open-source darling Lago’s CEO posted the rebrand with the energy of someone announcing they’ve finally organized their sock drawer. "Shoutout to the design team for... what, exactly?

Orb, meanwhile, went full design manifesto. Their Head of Design wrote a thesis comparing the rebrand to “personal growth” and called the project “Mirrorball”. They waxed poetic about their logo’s “r” resembling an Allen wrench, a symbol of “building and flexibility”.

“No staged poses” they say, but it sure does look like one.

The translation: “We hired an agency, they charged us six figures, and we’re now legally obligated to pretend this means something more serious”.

The bird thinks both companies are terrified.

Lago and Orb are trying to rebrand themselves as “AI native” because every billing vendor is scrambling to own the narrative that AI changes everything.

But instead of differentiating, they’ve all converged on the same beige, gradient-heavy, “trust us we’re serious now” aesthetic.

• Serif fonts (to look “editorial”)

• RGB gradients (because “digital”)

• “Mature” messaging (translation: boring)

• A manifesto blog post that uses the word “architecture” at least twelve times

• A CEO LinkedIn post thanking the design team with zero specifics

Most billing sites now looks like a YC startup circa 2023.

Indistinguishable. Forgettable. Safe.

Lago actually had something with their manifesto.

“An engineer is crying at their desk because they’ve spent 2 days on the logic of converting purchased credits into a usage allowance? That’s just how things are.”

That is a voice. That’s differentiation. That’s the kind of writing that makes engineers who have dealt with this send it around. Instead, they “grew up” and now sound like everyone else.

Orb could have leaned into their technical depth. They could have made their brand about precision, control, power. Instead, they made it about... Allen wrenches and personal growth metaphors.

Both rebrands suffer from the same disease: fear of being different.
